Have you always wanted to try your hand at pottery? Here in the pottery workshop, you have the chance to bring your ideas creatively into shape!
The pottery studio in Odate was built 10 years ago and is in a quiet location on the outskirts of the town, surrounded by residential buildings. The owner therefore uses a gas kiln to fire the works of art. The firing process with gas is easier to control and, above all, does not produce any smoke that could disturb the neighbors.
The workshop is designed in such a way that even larger groups can give free rein to their creativity without any previous experience. A cup, a plate and two “Hashioki”, chopstick rests, are made.
Pottery can also be tried out on the wheel in smaller groups or privately. Although it is much more difficult for beginners than it looks, with a little hard work and help from the owner, original and unique bowls, cups or mugs can be made. If you want to go through the whole process, you can also do the finishing under the guidance of the teacher after the necessary drying time.
After modelling, you are spoilt for choice: you can choose your preferred color for your little work of art from many different glazes.
Surprisingly, the owner explains to us that the same glaze can turn out completely different depending on the firing temperature and process. Depending on the temperature, you can either get a deep blue or a purple surface interspersed with blue speckles.
The studio specializes in Chinese-style pottery. This is characterized by fine, light production with detailed patterns and bold colors. This contrasts with Japanese-inspired pottery, which is heavier, with subtle colors and imperfections, known as “wabisabi”.
Despite the classic classification of styles, fun is not neglected here. The couple who run the studio are absolutely patient and understand how to get a message across despite any language barriers.
The firing of the cups, plates and other masterpieces takes some time, as the kiln has to be optimally filled. This means that we will send your finished works home to you by post as soon as possible. But don’t panic: so far everything has arrived intact and in good order.
