Together with Chris from YOYO Traveler, we are currently working on putting together a tour of Tohoku for all onsen fans! Chris specializes in Japanese bathing culture and takes a close look at every onsen or sento. Because not all onsen are the same! Depending on the origin and mineralization of the water, the bath is said to have a different beneficial effect on the body. Chris is particularly taken with the atmosphere of the onsen in northern Japan; relaxing in the warm water after a strenuous day while the snow piles up meters high in winter: incomparable. Combined with one of the local dishes such as Kiritanpo Nabe or Katsu Ramen, the result is a feeling of deep relaxation that is hard to describe. You have to experience it!
Northern Japan has a particularly large number of hot springs to offer. Very special ones at that. These include the most acidic spring in Japan, where the bath is described as downright tingling, or a mud bath, where volcanic mud in the water acts like a peeling for the pores.
So it’s worth trying out lots of different baths and discovering the revitalizing effects for yourself!
What this means for you: We plan and organize your trip through Tohoku, the north of Japan, with extra stops at the best hidden hot springs and you don’t have to worry about anything more than the flight.
Oh, and if you’re traveling in Tokyo or the surrounding area, you’ll find guides and how-to’s as well as recommendations and reviews of a whole range of bathhouses on YOYO Traveler. For example, you can find all tattoo-friendly onsen sorted by category!
Of course, you can also combine your onsen trip with a language course or one of the many other activities such as the Katana Experience. Read more about this here:
